Parking Policy for a Livable City

Preventing Excessive Parking Construction

Project
Description
Status & How to Help
4th & Freelon

369 cars

This is a special deal concocted by the developer, land owner, affordable housing builders, and Supervisor Chris Daly, to permit the developer to save money by building the parking above ground and put those savings into affordable housing offsite. This project has been approved. We are examining our options.

UC-Hastings Garage at Larkin and Golden Gate

up to 885 cars

Hastings University originally proposed an 885-car single-use parking garage at this site in the densely populated, already congested Tenderloin, at the former location of residential hotels. They have since modified their proposal to a mixed-use development, with parking for about 450 cars, a YMCA, and about 80 units of housing. Hastings can do better, but we don't have much leverage as they do not need city approval. State Senator John Burton helped us out last time. We're waiting to see Hastings' final proposal before we take any more action.
300 Spear St.-Rincon Hill

890 cars

On a half block near the base of the Bay Bridge, this project contains 820 residential units in two towers, a grocery store, and 820 parking spaces below ground. Livable City supported this project, as the residential parking will be unbundled from the housing, and it's all underground.
201 Folsom St.-Rincon Hill

1,150 cars

This is the twin to the project above, except that the residential parking is above ground (existing parking for hte USPS will be built below ground). Livable City opposed this project because the residential parking in the neighboring project should be enough for both developments, and parking should never be built above ground.
8th & Market - Trinity Plaza

1,350 cars

A 1,350-car parking garage at the Civic Center BART/Muni Metro stop? What are they thinking? This proposed apartment complex violates not only common sense, but also planning codes that allow a maximum of 528 spaces. This project requires environmental review, which has just begun. To get involved in Livable City's campaign to make this a better project, with less parking, get on the list by sending an email to Tom Radulovich.
8th & Mission - 1160 Mission Just a block away from the Civic Center BART/Muni Metro stop, these developers are proposing a 504-car above ground parking garage to accompany their 25-unit apartment tower. This project's next step is consideration by the Planning Commission. Mills Building, Mission district 76 residential condominiums (2/3 2- and 3BR units), 160 underground parking spaces. This project receives consideration at the Planning Commission Sept. 18.
301 Mission Street, approximately 400 spaces. Incredible! This much parking right at the TransbayTerminal. Livable City opposes this project, which has inexplicably been approved by the Planning Department but is being appealed to the Board of Supervisors.
Pavilion Mixed use convention center in the Tenderloin. 550 spaces This is on the site of old theaters and bars which were demolished by Glide Memorial Church and replaced with surface parking lots. Just submitted to Planning Department. EIR determined to be prepared. Need volunteer to participate in scoping.
