[Carfreeliving] SPUR and Transportation Reform

This reminds me that the Planning Dept really has an opportunity to take
advantage of MTC's Housing Incentive Program (HIP) grants, awarded to
transit-first housing projects. Maybe UC Extension and Planning can
work together to submit an application and thus have more money for all
the streetscape improvements etc. Prop K provides money for the
required local match.

I have already learned more about the MUNI fare cut debacle in 1/2 an
hour than all the fishwrappers and punditocracy combined!
Seriously, thanks Dave for stetting this up. For those that don't know
Hayes Valley Neighborhood Association just elected a new board and I can
safely say that just about every board member supports reduced parking
(or car-free development) at the UC Extension campus on Laguna@ Market-
whatever that redevelopment might be. Latest iteration by developers is
for 424 housing units, with 325-370 new parking spaces. 10 car-share
pods. But we will need the support of all of y'all to really get this
redevelopment shaped in a sustainable and socially just manner. There
are members (not board members) of HVNA that still think the ratio
should be 2:1, or are happy with the 0.69 - 0.78:1 ratios now proposed.
The potential for this 5.8 acre urban infill is enormous. I would hope
that SPUR, the Gaurdian, and Rescue Muni would all weigh-in for positive
social change by making this a model for car-free or at least car-lite
development.
