***PRESS RELEASE***

SUNDAY STREETS STARTS IN THE TENDERLOIN ON SUNDAY, JUNE 23, 2024

Celebrate the diversity of the Tenderloin with live music, free food, and fun for all ages

San Francisco, CA  The Sunday Streets Tenderloin block party will kick off San Francisco’s beloved community-powered open streets program on Sunday, June 23, 2024. In partnership with St. Anthony Foundation, the block party route will be on the Golden Gate Greenway, on Golden Gate Ave between Jones and Hyde St from 12 PM to 5 PM.

The mission of Sunday Streets is to create temporary open space and recreational opportunities in neighborhoods most lacking, encourage physical activity, foster community building, and inspire people to think about their streets as public spaces, which coincides with the vision of the Golden Gate Greenway initiative.

Led by St. Anthony’s and a coalition of partner organizations, the Golden Gate Greenway is a neighborhood initiative with the goal to create a permanent slow-street style closure on the 100 block of Golden Gate Avenue and transform it into a safe, open green space with events and activities for the Tenderloin community.

The Sunday Streets SF program is supported by City agencies, including the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) and the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA). “Access to open space in urban environments increases physical activity and social connections, thereby improving health and wellness” said Director of Health Dr. Grant Colfax. “SFDPH is proud to be a fiscal partner of the Sunday Streets program, bringing equitable health resources to our diverse communities.”

“The return of Sunday Streets is the perfect way to begin summer as blocks transform into community spaces,” said SFMTA Chief of Staff Viktoriya Wise. “We’re grateful to partner in this event series that lets our neighborhood streets shine with so much joy to be found in each one of them.”

Sunday Streets Tenderloin will bring together a diversity of neighbors to reclaim the streets in 2024. This year, we share the day with the Eid Al-Adha Mubarak Block Party that marks the first street closure in the city for a Muslim community event. Celebrate the Tenderloin with a host of activities:

  • Live stage performances sponsored by the Asian Pacific Islander Cultural Center’s 2024 United States of Asian America Festival (USAAF)
  • Golden Gate Greenway Pop-Up hosted by St. Anthony Foundation complete with a dunk tank and plant potting station, and senior laughing yoga by 826 Valencia.
  • Kids zone with the Book Wagon book giveaway, poetry box and reading by Faithful Fools, and CounterPulse drumming circle
  • Cultural eats with Himalayan Pizza & Momo and Mama G’s Street Dinners free food giveaway

The 2024 Sunday Streets season features four community block parties, two signature mile-plus routes, and the Fourth Annual Citywide Phoenix Day, including Tenderloin on June 23rd, Excelsior on July 21st, Bayview on August 4th, Mission on August 25th, Western Addition on September 22, SOMA on October 13, and the Phoenix Day Block Parties on October 20th.

Sunday Streets Tenderloin: the sun was shining, bubbles were blowing, and close to 3000 people enjoyed jam-packed blocks of car-free fun! 🎉

All the amazing volunteers, exhibitors, performers, and Tenderloin neighbors, nonprofits, and businesses made June 23rd an incredible day for Sunday Streets Tenderloin and the Eid Al-Adha Mubarak Block Party.

As covered in the SF Chronicle by reporter Sam Whiting, “S.F.’s roving block parties return with promise of ‘pedestrian oasis’ in a neighborhood that needs it.”

Thank you as well to Mayor London Breed, Supervisor Dean Preston, and SFMTA Director Jeffrey Tumlin for joining in the festivities and supporting Sunday Streets.
