San Francisco Crosstown Trails

Connecting the four corners of San Francisco, the Crosstown Trails run through hidden trails, public parks, shopping corridors, tiled stairways, and community gardens. The trails are the work of a small group of local volunteers who believe in building community and healthy adventuring outdoors.

Diamond Heights Boulevard Median Project

The Diamond Heights Boulevard Median Project is inspiring neighbors and friends to replant and maintain the median islands along Diamond Heights Blvd., between Duncan St. and Berkeley Way.

The project will be carried out in phases over several years. Design choices will anticipate plant life expectancy and site maintenance requirements for at least the next decade.

Page Slow Street

Our mission is to activate the streetspace on Page Slow Street to encourage residents & visitors to use it for recreation, socializing, and active transportation. Page Street is an important link in a car-light route from Ferry Building to Ocean Beach, and we envision it as a linear park or greenway enhanced by street gardens and art with regular activations by residents.

San Francisco Urban Riders

SF Urban Riders is an organization dedicated to creating more offroad cycling opportunities in San Francisco. Our goal is to build a city-wide network of trails where people of all ages and abilities can ride bikes for fun and as a way to experience the outdoors in an urban environment.

Trail work and habitat work at Laguna Honda has returned to our regular 2nd Saturday of the month schedule as of Summer 2021; click here for more information.

Starting November 2021, we’re working with Rec & Park every other month at the McLaren Bike Park (January, March, May, etc), typically on the 3rd Saturday. Schedule and sign up here.

Mount Sutro Open Space Reserve, San Francisco, CA

Sutro Stewards

The mission of the Sutro Stewards is to build community, connect people with nature, and protect and enhance Mount Sutro, one of the city’s wildest and most beautiful green spaces. We do this by working with volunteers to develop and maintain multi-use trails while conserving habitat for locally native plants and wildlife.

Sutro Stewards work to conserve habitat through ecological restoration and native plant propagation while providing recreational opportunities in the UCSF Mount Sutro Open Space Reserve. Mount Sutro Open Space, located in the geographic center of San Francisco, was overlooked by surrounding communities for a century. In the last decade, the true value of the open space was revealed through the Sutro Stewards’ creation of multi-use trails, allowing the public to explore this exceptional place.

Since 2006, we have mobilized volunteers to build trails, remove invasive species, and grow and install native plants. We are the largest organized independent volunteer pool in San Francisco, engaging over 1,000 volunteers each year and hosting six or more events a month. We work with city agencies and land managers to continue to expand the network of connectivity between San Francisco opens spaces and engage the community in the planning of improvements and long-term stewardship of each project.

West Portal Library Memorial Project

On March 16, 2024, a young family of four were struck and killed by a motorist in West Portal. Brazilian-born advertising professional Diego Cardoso de Oliveira, 40, and his 38-year-old wife Matilde Ramos Pinto, a Portuguese-Irish video producer, were killed with their two sons—19-month-old Joaquim and 3-month-old Cauê.

Livable City, in partnership with the San Francisco Public Library, is commissioning artists Michael Brown and David Cole to create an art memorial honoring the family. The memorial will be a bronze statue atop of a pre-cast cement base. It will feature four pillars representing each of the family members. The concrete will have an inscription “together forever, your deep love for each other will be your lasting legacy” sandblasted in Portuguese. The piece will sit on the South west corner of the exterior court yard at the West Portal Branch Library.

To support the creation, installation, and initial maintenance on the memorial, Livable City has a fundraising goal of $85,000 by 2026.
