Imagine lofty peaks with panoramic views, free-flowing streams, natural lakes, grasslands and forests providing habitat for native plants and animals, linked together with trails, paths, public stairs, and wildlife corridors, right in the heart of San Francisco. Now imagine if it connected via networks of trails and green streets and bikeways to all parts of the city and out to the regional greenbelt. A Twin Peaks Bioregional Park, linking Mt. Sutro, Twin Peaks, Glen Canyon, Laguna Honda, and Mt. Davidson, is an idea that has been around for decades. It has been gradually coming into reality thanks to the advocacy and hands-on work of San Franciscans inside and outside of City government.
Last year Livable City presented a Plan for Twin Peaks, a detailed plan for the central portion of the bioregion including Twin Peaks and the reservoir lands. It included recommendations for restoring and conserving habitat, connecting trails, enhancing public places and park gateways, better walking, cycling, and public transit access, and transforming Portola Drive into a landscaped multimodal parkway.
Earlier this year Livable City organized open space and environmental advocates, including Sutro Stewards, Nature in the City, Crosstown Trails, Bay Area Ridge Trail, SF Urban Riders, California Native Plant Society, and others, to advocate that the City to officially endorse the Twin Peaks Bioregional Park and apply for funding from the 2024 California Climate Bond for trail and access improvements, habitat conservation and restoration projects, acquiring key undeveloped private land to complete trail and wildlife corridors, and improve tree health, safety, and resiliency in the eucalyptus groves.
Tuesday September 29th was a milestone day for the Twin Peaks Bioregional Park, as Mayor Lurie announced his intention to implement the park at the 2026 California 30 x 30 Partnership Summit, and Supervisor Melgar introduced a resolution at the Board of Supervisors outlining an action plan for creating the park and engaging stakeholders.
Livable City is committed to fully manifesting the bioregional park. Stay tuned for news about next steps and to get involved.
